The New Diabetics Diet
by:Dr.Andaleeb

The Nutritional Committee of the Canadian Diabetes Association has recently published Guidelines for the Nutritional Management of Diabetes Mellitus in the New Millennium, which includes recommendations on how and what people with diabetes should eat to maintain blood sugar levels and stay as healthy as possible. These guidelines dispel the old myth that people with diabetes have to follow a special and often restrictive diet.

In general, the new nutritional advice for people with diabetes is the same as that for all Canadians - following the principles of Canada's Guide for Healthy Eating.

People with diabetes are being encouraged to enjoy a wide variety of foods, with emphasis on carbohydrates. In fact, carbohydrates from sources such as cereals, breads, vegetables, fruit, dairy foods, etc. should provide more than half of the daily calorie requirements - the same as recommended for Canadians in general.

One surprise for many is that the new diabetes diet includes added sugars, in moderation. Sugars such as table sugar, honey, jams and jellies and sugar-sweetened products can comprise up to 10 percent of the required daily calories for most people with diabetes, with no negative effects on blood sugar or fat levels.

Food management for people with diabetes no longer means a restrictive diet, but rather a healthy eating regimen that family and friends can also enjoy…and benefit from. The bottom line is that a well-planned diet (with the aid of your doctor and dietitian) combined with regular physical activity are important to managing (and preventing) diabetes
